Nevada Arts Council awards fall Jackpot Grants to artists statewide

image001-7012640-7497006CARSON CITY — The Nevada Arts Council has awarded more than $9,000 through its Jackpot Grant category to 10 artists and one organization in support of arts projects scheduled between October and December. Among them were three Reno residents, four from Las Vegas and one each from West Wendover, Fernley, Virginia City and North Las Vegas. Jackpot Grants are awarded on a quarterly scheduled and are designed to support new or exemplary arts and education projects initiated by artists, schools, nonprofit organizations and public institutions.

Reno-area grants went to Kyle Akins, who was awarded $860 to support the creation of an art piece based on the visualization of audio waves for the permanent collection of the Holland Project; Dane Haman received $817 to complete preparation of “F13,” a photography exhibit; and L. Martina Young garnered $933 to support the premier performance of “SWAN: a Poetical Inquiry in Dance, Text, and Memoir” at the Lighthouse Studio.

In Las Vegas, among the grant recipients was Jennifer Grimm, with $817 to support a mini-tour of Trio Southwest, a flute, viola and harp chamber ensemble. Mary Hill received $900 for preparation and installation of “Mesquite,” a new handcrafted book exhibit at the Clark County Government Center in conjunction with the Vegas Valley Book Festival. Sean Russell was awarded $854 to complete a painted mural highlighting the Clark County Wetlands Park at the Winchester Cultural Center Gallery. Writers of Southern Nevada received $933 to support its writers’ conference, “Fiction Writing in the Digital Age.”

From rural Nevada, Justin Evans of West Wendover was awarded $873 to support publication and marketing of his third full-length poetry collection “Sailing This Nameless Ship.” Shaun Griffin, Virginia City, received $1,000 to support costs related to a reading of his new book “From Sorrow’s Well — The Poetry of Hayden Carruth” at the Vermont Studio Center. Pan Pantoja from Fernley received $690 to create new visual and performance art pieces in his “Potentialist” workshop in Reno. Lisa Wright of North Las Vegas received $826 to collect photographs and stories of women of diverse backgrounds for the publication “50/50: Fifty Women, Fifty Stories.”

The deadline for fiscal year 2014 third quarter Jackpot Grant applications for projects scheduled from Jan. 1 to March 31 is Nov. 15.

The Nevada Arts Council, a division of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, is the agency charged with ensuring that state and national funds support cultural activity and encourage participation in the arts throughout Nevada. In addition to providing hundreds of grants to arts- and community-based organizations, schools, artists and local municipalities throughout the state, the NAC coordinates a such statewide programs and activities as the annual Poetry Out Loud recitation competition for high school-aged students, traveling exhibits, artist residencies, workshops and cultural assessments.
