Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey supports Stand Tall teams in all high schools in Storey, Lyon and Mineral. During the school year, these youth leadership groups educate their peers, younger students and their communities about the benefits of active living, healthy eating,  sober lifestyles and the effects of alcohol, tobacco, prescription and other drug use.

The teams also take on a number of projects every year to serve their communities, including coat, shoe and food drives. In addition, Stand Tall teams sponsor community 5K Walk/Run community events to promote fitness and to raise funds for their Stand Tall college scholarships.

In August and September of 2013 alone, the teams reached more than 5,000 people and contributed nearly 200 hours of volunteer work to their communities.

At each of their high schools, the teams have been actively recruiting new members and holding meetings, planning for such events as Get Real student/adult focus groups, Walk the Track Day for International Walk to School Day, Red Ribbon Week illegal drug use prevention campaign, an Alcohol and Other Drugs Education campaign and leadership training.

Some of the Stand Tall members attended the Washoe County Obesity Forum in September, as well as a Pure Performance Sports health training.

For more information about the Stand Tall teams, contact regional coordinator Lavurne Jeffreys at 246-7550.
