Grammy winner to perform with Reno Chamber Orchestra this weekend

rcorenochamberorchestra-6730323-5043139Grammy® award-winning mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor is the featured soloist in the first concerts of the Reno Chamber Orchestra’s 2013-14 season. The performances take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2:00 p.m. at UNR’s Nightingale Concert Hall.

O’Connor will sing Les nuits d’été (Summer Nights) by Hector Berlioz with the Reno Chamber Orchestra. Theodore Kuchar, entering his eleventh season as RCO music director, conducts the performances, which also feature music by Carl Maria von Weber, Claude Debussy and Franz Josef Haydn.

Ticket prices for these concerts range from $22 to $45 for adults, and everyone 18 and younger (and all full-time students) can attend for $5.

Kelley O’Connor has emerged as one of the most compelling performers of her generation. During the 2012-13 season, the California native’s impressive calendar included John Adams’s The Gospel According to the Other Mary in a world premiere performed in America and Europe with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel, and a role debut as Suzuki in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in a new production at Boston Lyric Opera. She has received international critical acclaim for her numerous performances as Federico García Lorca in Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar, and took part in the work’s Grammy® Award-winning Deutsche Grammophon recording. Her discography also includes Peter Lieberson’s Neruda Songs and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Kelley O’Connor appears by arrangement with IMG Artists.

Maestro Theodore Kuchar is the most recorded conductor of his generation, with over 100 compact discs to his credit on the Brilliant Classics, Naxos, Marco Polo, and Ondine labels. He holds the posts of Reno Chamber Orchestra music director, artistic director of the RCO’s Nevada Chamber Music Festival, music director of the Fresno Philharmonic, artistic director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela, and conductor emeritus of the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. He has collaborated with world-renowned artists like James Galway, Joshua Bell, Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Lynn Harrell, Jessye Norman, Sarah Chang, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Frederica von Stade.
