For residence hall move-in day Thursday, motorists may wish to avoid using North Sierra Street from Comstock Drive (to the north) to Ninth Street (to the south) from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The street will be open but is expected to be congested.
Motorists are encouraged to watch for pedestrians in the vicinity of the University and to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Pedestrians are asked to use crosswalks, observe signs and signals, pay attention to traffic, make eye contact with drivers and make sure cars are slowing to stop before stepping off the curb.
University officials would also like to remind students moving into the residence halls this week to come prepared with forms completed, allow extra time for parking and checking in, and to follow the move-in map and directions. Because there is limited space around the residence halls, there is space set aside at the north end of campus where students and parents can park while checking in.
University of Nevada, Reno fall classes begin Monday, Aug. 26. With the start of the new semester, motorists around the University are reminded to obey traffic laws. Some additional tips for motorists include:
- Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
- Observe stop signs and signals
- Don’t pass other drivers who stop at crosswalks
- Make eye contact with pedestrians
- Scan sidewalks to see if pedestrians are preparing to leave the curb
- Observe posted speed limits
- No texting while driving
“Our goal is to ensure that campus is a safe place to live, study and work,” Todd Renwick, commander, with University Police Services said. “The No. 1 thing people can do to increase safety on and around campus is pay attention to their surroundings and that includes pedestrian and motor vehicle safety.”
