Reno adventurer Ruth Anne Kocour has traveled in many of the world’s most remote areas, using local guides and traveling on foot with camels and yaks. Her expedition through Pakistan, along the border of Afghanistan and to the base of K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, is a tale of history, cultural differences, and personal resolve.
Kocour, author of Walking the War Zones of Pakistan, will share her personal slides and stories as part of TMCC’s Distinguished Speaker Series (DSS).  Her intense journey will inspire you as she shares her travels through isolated areas, crossing deserts, glaciers and mountains towards some of Earth’s rarely-seen geographical wonders. Experience her adventures on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. at Truckee Meadows Community College, Sierra Building, room 108.
Her journeys have been featured on CNN’s International Hour and the Discovery Channel with photos and stories appearing in People, Harper’s Bazaar, Health, Sunset, the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. Kocour has climbed the highest peaks on four continents, throughout Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. Her background in art, science and photography enables Kocour to bring to life these adventures for her audience.
Tickets for the event are $10 for general admission and $5 for students with any valid student ID. Students may alternatively bring a donation of non-perishable food items and attend for free (with valid student ID). Tickets can be purchased by visiting the Red Mountain Building at the Dandini Campus, room 324; the front desk of the High Tech Center at Redfield; or the front desk of the IGT Applied Technology Center on Edison Way. There is limited seating available and early purchase is recommended.
It is the aim of the TMCC Distinguished Speaker Series to bring a broad spectrum of speakers to the college to enrich the academic lives of students and community members. The opportunity to hear a variety of speakers and attend different events offers a greater understanding of different cultural perspectives to participants. The DSS is chaired by Dianne Cheseldine, founder of the series. This event is presented in partnership with the Northern Nevada International Center.
