BLM Ely District Cancels Two Small Helicopter Gathers

Date:

blm_logo-150x150-6002147-7842037Ely, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District has decided to remove the Silver King Herd Management Area Wild Horse Gather and the Delamar Mountains Herd Area Wild Horse Gather from the Fiscal Year 2013 summer gather schedule to possibly allow for other higher-priority gather needs.  The Silver King gather was slated to start July 26 to remove 25 wild horses, and the Delamar gather was slated for July 28 to remove 30 wild horses.
Both gathers were intended to address public safety issues and were not escalating or emergency situations.  The Delamar gather is deferred until the fall, which is a more appropriate time of year when the wild horses are more active along the highway corridor and posing a safety issue.  For the issues associated with the Silver King horses, the Ely District is working with the Nevada Department of Transportation to reduce the horses’ access to U.S. Highway 93 through placement of a right-of-way fence.
For more information, contact Chris Hanefeld, BLM Ely District public affairs specialist, at (775) 289-1842 [email protected].
