The Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Minden and the Wilbur D. May Center in Reno have reached the final round of the Discover Your Nevada social media contest sponsored by the Nevada Commission on Tourism. Interested people can cast their vote online through 5 p.m. Aug. 2 at TravelNevada.com/discover. The winner, set to be announced Aug. 5, will be designated the top regional treasure in the Reno-Tahoe region.

Dangberg Home Ranch won the contest in 2012; this is the first year the May Center has been in the final round.

“We couldn’t be prouder to be listed next to the Wilbur D. May Center in the final round,” Mark Jensen, Dangberg Home Ranch park curator, said. “The May collection is amazing, and the museum’s programming sets a good example as we work toward similar goals.”

Dangberg Home Ranch, 1450 Nevada 88 in Minden, preserves the home Heinrich F. Dangberg and his descendants. The Dangbergs, a prominent Carson Valley ranching family, founded Minden in 1905. The site includes eight historic structures built between 1857 and 1917, along with a collection of 39,000 artifacts, documents and photographs acquired and used by the Dangberg family. Programs include tours, exhibits and other public events. The park is operated by the nonprofit Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch in cooperation with Douglas County.

“The Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park beautifully preserves Nevada’s rich ranching culture, so it is no wonder they won last year,” Samantha Szesciorka, May Center assistant curator, said. “We’re honored to have made it this far and to be up against a real Nevada treasure.”

Located within Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, 1595 N. Sierra St. in Reno, the May Center is a museum, arboretum and botanical garden. Founded in 1985, the May Center preserves the life and legacy of Wilbur May, a Reno rancher, world traveler and philanthropist. Along with a collection of rare historical artifacts, the May Center offers revolving exhibits, lectures, workshops and other educational opportunities for the community.
