Accidental drowning in Truckee River claims two lives

Date:

RPD NEWS RELEASE

Two people have died in the Truckee River.

The 18- and 23-year-old victims entered the river just west of the South McCarran bridge.  According to witness statements, they entered an area of the river that is quite deep. They were unable to swim and disappeared under the water.

The Sparks Fire Department, Police Department and Washoe County Search and Rescue responded. They pulled both victims from the river and they were transported to Renown, where they were pronounced dead.

The names of the victims will be withheld pending notification of their families.

The Reno Police Department would like to remind the citizens of the Truckee Meadows to always wear an approved flotation device when entering the river.  Never enter any body of water if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  The flow and current of the Truckee river can be unpredictable. Use a buddy system and avoid swimming alone.

Anyone with further information with regard to this accident is asked to contact the Reno Police Department at 334-2121.
