Marvin Picollo School

WHAT:

The Chamber’s Leadership Reno Sparks Class of 2013 will officially break ground at Marvin Picollo and begin construction on a newly designed therapeutic preschool playground. The new playground will greatly enhance support for students by providing opportunities for physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreational leisure and social skills.

A special needs school like Marvin Picollo is unique in that there are few school districts in the nation that accommodate the public school education and exercise needed for special youth to enjoy cognitive development.

Each year, the Chamber’s LRS class chooses a special project that focuses on addressing community needs. The LRS Class of 2013 has elected to rebuild a therapeutic playground for the pre-school students at Marvin Picollo School, a public school within the Washoe County School District that addresses cognitive development for special needs youth.

With an enrollment of approximately 120 students, Marvin Picollo requires special accommodations as many of the students require wheelchairs and other special equipment to assist mobility. As it approaches its 40th year in service, the school is in need of modification and improvement of its playground to serve its current and future pre-school students enrolled at this unique school.
