us-doi-blm-logo-11-300x261-6338936-3132657ELKO, Nev. – On Saturday, June 22, the California Trail Interpretive Center will hold the unveiling of a new sculpture entitled “Our Heritage is Our Future.” The sculpture is located in the plaza at the entrance to the Center.

The artist, Ben Victor, was chosen by a committee that determined concept and selected the artist.  The committee was comprised of local Native American artists and historians and Trail Center Manager, Gary Koy.  At age 26, Victor became the youngest artist ever to have a sculpture in the Nation’s foremost collection of figurative sculpture, the National Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol. Victor will be on hand for the unveiling of his latest creation.

“This sculpture of a generic great basin woman represents the native people of this area. It will be the first thing people see as they enter the Trail Center representing the native people were here first,” said Trail Center Manager Gary Koy. “On their way out, they will see the back side of the sculpture where there will be a cradleboard representing future generations.”

The unveiling will take place at 2 p.m. and there will be light refreshments available.

The California Trail Interpretive Center, operated by the Bureau of Land Management, is located eight miles west of Elko, at Hunter exit 292 off Interstate 80. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Visit www.blm.gov/cv5c, our Facebook page or call (775) 738-1849 for more information.
