Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows breaks ground for Pennington facility

Date:

Front Entry West_GBBGC NEWS — The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows officially breaks ground on the new William N. Pennington Facility, June 4 at 11 a.m. The groundbreaking ceremony will include City of Reno officials, foundation partners and members of the Club’s board of directors to start the construction phase of the project for the new 55,000-square foot facility scheduled to be completed by summer 2014.

The new Pennington Boys & Girls Club Facility located on Foster Drive will serve the needs of the immediate southwest Reno neighborhood and many nearby schools. The facility is expected to serve more than 3,000 youth annually, an increase of 27 percent of the Club’s current membership of 11,000 youth.

“This piece of property has been serving youth and families for more than 50 years and we are very excited to bring those services back to the community,” said Mike Wurm, chief professional officer of the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. “This exciting new chapter for the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows is due to the generosity of our local foundations and the City of Reno.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows Executive Board of Directors accepted the recommendation by the Club’s Facilities Committee for United Construction (Reno, NV) to serve as the general contractor for the project. The full board of directors will vote to approve the action item at the monthly board meeting this week.

To date, funding for the new Pennington Facility has come primarily from local foundations and a handful of local businesses. The Club is now beginning a community-wide fundraising campaign to solicit gifts from individuals, families, corporations and other foundations to raise the final funds needed for the project. The Pennington Facility provides various naming opportunities including wings, gymnasium courts, rooms, climbing wall, donor wall and a brick display. The Club is selling $100, $250 and $500 bricks with custom messages that will be in the ground-level brick (paver) display in front of the new building. Visit www.BGCTM.org/BRICKS to design and purchase bricks.
