County Senior Services seeking applicants for advisory board

washoe-150x150-4873085-4117838The Washoe County Senior Services Department is seeking applicants for four openings on its advisory board. Those applying must be Washoe County residents, preferably age 60 or older, who are willing to provide input and have 2-4 hours per month to volunteer.

Senior Services is seeking two representatives from District 5, one representative from District 1 and one alternate from any District. Members must live in the District they represent. The Board is constituted to support the implementation of the policies of the Board of Washoe County Commissioners as they apply to the functioning, management, and operation of the Senior Services Department of Washoe County; to recommend programs for seniors; to make specific recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners on the operations of the Department; and to sustain the purposes of senior centers.

Membership: The Board shall consist of not less than 7 or more than 11 members and up to two alternates, all whom must be residents of Washoe County and who are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners. The three government entities of Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County shall each be invited to appoint a representative and a delegated alternate. The director of the department shall serve, ex officio, as a member of the Board.

Time Commitment: Board members serve a 4-year term; meetings are held monthly and run 1-2 hours and members usually spend 2-6 hours per month outside of meetings on board-assigned business.

Authority: The Advisory Board shall provide assistance and make recommendations to the director, at a minimum, in the following areas: 1. Develop long and short-range departmental goals; 2. Recommend and evaluate programs and policies; 3. Review the quality of departmental services provided; 4. Provide input to the County Manager regarding the performance of the director of Senior Services; 5. Provide technical assistance as applicable; 6. Review and make recommendations regarding the department’s proposed budget; 7. Review and provide input to the director regarding community trends and needs.
