WASHOE COUNTY NEWS RELEASE

washoe-150x150-6196449-3565148Washoe County officials are encouraging the public to take advantage of a free prescription discount card available to county residents regardless of age, income or existing health coverage. The hassle-free card has been available since 2006 through the county’s membership in the National Association of Counties (NACo).

“Washoe County launched the program to help our residents cope with the high price of prescriptions,” said Washoe County Commissioner and Vice-Chair Bonnie Weber. “With so many families struggling, we want to make sure everyone knows that these valuable discount cards are available at no cost to the consumer or taxpayer.”

Nationally, nearly $500 million has been saved on more than 37 million prescription purchases since the program began in late 2004. The average savings per transaction is 24 percent. Weber said county officials are hopeful that more Washoe County residents obtain a card and begin saving money today.

“Using the prescription discount card is easy,” Weber said. “Simply present it at a participating pharmacy. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. Cardholders and their family members may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance.”

Residents can search for nearby participating pharmacies by visiting www.nacorx.org. A full list of participating pharmacies in Washoe County is also available online at www.washoecounty.us/repository/files/2/WC_pharmacies_accepting_NACo_card.pdf.

The card can also be used for some pet medications.

The program is administered on behalf of the county and NACo by CVS Caremark. Cards are available by contacting Washoe County Social Services at (775) 328-2700 or calling toll free 1-877-321-2652. Residents can also print their own card at www.nacorx.org.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) is the only national organization that represents county governments in the United States. Founded in 1935, NACo provides essential services to the nation’s 3,068 counties. NACo advances issues with a unified voice before the federal government, improves the public’s understanding of county government, assists counties in finding and sharing innovative solutions through education and research, and provides value-added services to save counties and taxpayers money. For more information about NACo, visit www.naco.org.
