UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA NEWS RELEASE – Nevada State Senator Ruben Kihuen will speak to students on the University of Nevada, Reno campus on Wednesday, March 27, in honor of an annual César Chavez Day Celebration hosted by the Latino Research Center’s Latino Student Advisory Board. This year’s celebration will bring students together to engage in dialogue about worker’s rights, education, legislative reform and leadership.

Members of the Latino Student Advisory Board (LSAB) are excited to have Senator Kihuen as a guest speaker and they hope to be motivated and inspired by his speech. As a Latino senator in the Nevada Legislature, Senator Kihuen is an influential figure to many students.

“I hope to hear two things from Senator Kihuen: information about the brief history of Nevada’s César Chavez day and also current efforts in the Nevada Legislature to improve the lives of Latinos,” LSAB secretary Ivon Padilla said.

César Chavez is honored for his leadership in the nonviolent 1960s movement to improve farmworkers rights and wages. His role and work as a civil rights leader culminated in many important gains for Latinos and immigrant workers.

LSAB is a student club that works directly with the Latino Research Center to create events that focus on enhancing the Latino community in Nevada through public outreach, academic excellence, and political movements.

The event begins at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, in the Knowledge Center Rotunda. In addition to Senator Kihuen’s speech there will also be food, beverages, and entertainment provided. All media are welcome to attend.

The Latino Research Center at the University of Nevada, Reno serves as a nexus between the Latino community and the university. Its mission is to foster research, student achievement, faculty collaboration, advocacy, and outreach in a manner that best meets the educational needs and goals of the State of Nevada and best honors the intellectual and cultural capital of the Latino presence in our state.
