dri-1801482-5119773DRI NEWS — The Desert Research Institute (DRI) today announced that IBM (NYSE:IBM) will sponsor the 2013 DRI Nevada Medal Event, set for April 30 in Reno and May 2 in Las Vegas. The announcement follows the approval of Nevada’s first Center of Excellence in Las Vegas and the award of an IBM Smarter Cities Challenge grant to the City of Reno.

The $50,000 presenting sponsorship contribution will support research at DRI in the fields of atmospheric, earth and ecosystems, and hydrological sciences.

“It is an honor to make this contribution to DRI, one of the world’s distinguished environmental research institutions,” said Katherine Holland, IBM senior state executive for Nevada and general manager of IBM, Global Life Sciences Industry. “IBM is committed to research and innovation in Nevada and utilizing our time, talent and resources to improve the quality of life in the communities where we do business.”

This year’s DRI Nevada Medal Event proudly honors Dr. Nina V. Fedoroff for her outstanding achievements in the field of life sciences and biotechnology. Her research on the molecular biology of plants and their responses to environmental stress has helped develop modern techniques used to analyze plants; and she has now undertaken to pioneer solutions to some of the world’s most difficult agricultural challenges.

Fedoroff is a Distinguished Professor of Biosciences and Director of the Center for Desert Agriculture at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia, where she is establishing an experimental program in crop and aquaculture biology and technology for arid climates. She has served on the National Science Foundation’s National Science Board, as President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and is currently serving as the Chair of the AAAS Board of Directors.

“We are very pleased to expand our unique relationship with IBM to include support of our annual DRI Nevada Medal Event,” said Dr. Stephen G. Wells, DRI President. “IBM has repeatedly shown their support for the Governor’s plan for excellence in economic development and this kind of corporate philanthropy showcases their commitment as the nation’s most community-minded company.”

Guests are invited to attend the 2013 DRI Nevada Medal Event, hosted by the DRI Foundation. The evening program will feature both a private and a general cocktail reception followed by a formal dinner with presentation of the DRI Nevada Medal Award and the honoree’s public lecture.

Events are scheduled for Tuesday, April 30 in Reno and Thursday, May 2, 2013 in Las Vegas.
