Ensuring a safe, fun St. Patrick’s Day

Date:

CITY OF RENO NEWS RELEASE

This Sunday, Reno will be filled with residents and visitors dressed in green, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.

“There are numerous events happening all around Reno this weekend to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day,” advises city of Reno Special Events Coordinator Alexis Hill. “We want everyone to enjoy themselves while being safe.”

The city of Reno’s Community Safety & Service Team will be working with businesses owners today to help businesses stay safe and ensure they are following all regulations and applicable laws. The CSAST team consists of representatives from the Reno Police Department, Code Enforcement, Business License and Reno Fire Department plus will include other agencies when needed.

One of the many St. Patrick’s Day events occurring this year is the Leprechaun Chase. The city of Reno is a proud sponsor of this new event that consists of a 5K run/walk on Sunday through the streets in Midtown and the Wells Avenue District. On Feb. 27, the Reno City Council approved $3,000 in in-kind sponsorship for city services for the event.

The road closures for the Leprechaun Chase will occur on Sunday, March 17, from approximately 6 a.m. to noon. The closures will include Center Street between Holcomb Avenue and Stewart Street; Holcomb Avenue between Liberty and Pueblo streets; Stewart Street between Center Street and Wells Avenue; and Wells Avenue southbound between Stewart and Pueblo streets.

Suggested alternative routes include using Sinclair and Wheeler Avenue. Please note there will be volunteers and Reno Police Officers working the course to allow residential traffic to cross when safe.

An additional road closure for St Patrick’s Day festivities will be Vesta Street between Wells and Holcomb Avenues. This closure will occur between 9 am on March 17 until noon on March 18.

The Reno Police Department is encouraging people to enjoy the St. Patrick’s Day festivities but to do so by not drinking and driving to help keep everyone on the streets safe. Having a designated driver or using public transportation is one way to avoid the tragedy of a DUI related traffic accident that can result in death or serious injury.

For fiscal year 2012-2013, the Reno City Council outlined arts, culture and special events as one of their priorities. The city of Reno encourages community events that add quality of life for our residents and visitors. The city of Reno strives to protect and add both regional and local special events which will grow the current tourism base and attract new visitors.
