Each month of the new 2013 Nevada Geology Calendar offers a stunning photo of the state’s dramatic landscape, plus facts about the varied geology found around the Great Basin. This photo of sandstone in the Valley of Fire State Park in Clark County is featured in July. The official state rock, sandstone was used to build the Nevada state capitol building and the former United State Mint building in Carson City. The calendar, on sale now, was produced by one of the University of Nevada’s statewide public service departments, the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology. Nevada Commission on Tourism’s annual rural marketing conference to be held April 17-19, 2013 in Pahrump

CARSON CITY, Nev. — The 23rd annual Rural Roundup will be held this year in Pahrump, as tourism leaders gather from across the state to learn about managing online reputations, international tourism markets and more. The conference will be held April 17-19 at the Pahrump Nugget Hotel and Casino.

“This event is something the tourism community looks forward to every year because of the extraordinary tools it provides to help boost travel to rural Nevada,” Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, chairman of the Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT), said. “As the leading economic driver for our state, it’s important that our communities are able to successfully attract both domestic and international visitors.”

Sessions on reinventing longstanding special events, marketing the state and the country through Brand USA and enhancing motorcycle and bicycle tourism also are on the schedule. And NCOT will provide insights into its new brand and show its new spring/summer ad campaign, including the newly redesigned TravelNevada.com website. The Rural Roundup event also includes the annual VolunTourism Awards Dinner recognizing industry leaders who have developed tourism in rural Nevada. Previous winners include Marvin Minnick, who received the 2012 Statewide Excellence in Tourism award, and the Wells Chamber of Commerce, which was recognized with the 2012 Excellence in Grants Award.

“Rural Nevada has much to offer an increasingly diverse visitor base,” Claudia Vecchio, director of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, said. “Rural Roundup is where industry leaders and champions gain insights into innovative ways to drive economic impact through enhanced visitor experiences.”

Rural Roundup is also an opportunity to familiarize tourism leaders with the entire state. Every year, the conference is offered in a different rural community to showcase the area. This year, a Rural Roundup Highway 95 familiarization tour will be offered to conference attendees, with a motor coach departing for Pahrump on April 16 with pick-ups in Reno, Carson City and Tonopah, for an additional charge.

Pre-conference networking activities include a golf game at Mountain Falls Golf Club, a visit to Pahrump’s two wineries and a barbecue-and-boating event. Registration for Rural Roundup is $65 through

5 p.m. April 5, and $85 after. For Rural Roundup registration, news and updates, please follow the conference on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ruralroundup or visit www.ruralroundup.com.
