OUR STORY NEWS RELEASE

“Creepy” . . . the word most uttered by viewers ogling the slave shackles at the 2013 Our Story, Inc. legislative exhibit.

Featuring the 150th celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation and Nevadaʼs role in the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution, the interactive exhibit proved a conversation starter for over 200 persons who stopped by.

Senator Pat Spearman commented that the Emancipation Proclamation also freed the slave-holders, creating an equal challenge to all Americans to take responsibility for their citizenship and development.

History was also made during the week. The state of Mississippi had ratified the 14th Amendment in 1995, after rejecting it in 1865. However, the certified action was never delivered to the United States archivist, so there was no official date recorded. That was accomplished this week in 2013 when the oversight and lack of completion was rectified when original documents were found and and delivered to the archivist.

During the week, Assemblymen William Horne and Harvey Munford and Senator Pat Spearman provided insightful interviews that will be loaded on the Our Story website in the near future.

Our Story, Inc. documents and presents the stories of the unsung in northern Nevada history. Formal exhibits also include Ben Palmer, Jim Beckworth, Joe Gans, Jack Johnson and the Tuskegee airmen. Holdings include manuscripts, pictures, electronic recordings, ephemera and an extensive library about persons of color within the community.
