Planned Parenthood Mar Monte will commemorate the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade with the artistic event, “Women, Art, and Courage.” This exhibition of women and their rights in art will be held at Wildflower Village on Saturday, January 26, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The cost of $40 per person includes a champagne brunch and artist showcase.

“As the leading women’s health care provider and advocate in Nevada, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte understands that abortion is a deeply personal and often complex decision for a woman to consider if and when she needs it,” said Alison Gaulden, Vice President of Nevada Public Affairs, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. “Art and its interpretation of courage is one way for us to respect the real life decisions women and their families face every day. Just as art cannot be dictated, personal decision making and information should not be provided with the intent of coercing, shaming or judging a woman. ”

In 1965, illegal abortions made up nearly one-fifth of all pregnancy and childbirth-related deaths. In the 40 years since Roe v. Wade blocked states from banning abortion, it has been one of the safest medical procedures — today, less than 0.3 percent of women undergoing legal abortions sustain a serious complication. Despite abortion being legal, constitutionally protected, and consistently supported by a majority of Americans, opponents of women’s health have made it increasingly harder for women to access it. In states such as Texas, South Dakota, Florida, and Michigan, some politicians have eroded access to safe and legal abortion through court battles, ballot measures, and burdensome legislative restrictions. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte stand with women across the country.
