MUSEUM STORE — Valentine’s Day Trunk Show

Saturday, February 9 / noon – 3 pm

Kick off the Valentine’s Day festivities with jewelry artist Penney Leezy who creates custom pieces of jewelry with natural and semi-precious stones from around the world.

Admission to the Museum Store is FREE.

COMPOSITION CAFÉ — Constellation Wines Dinner

Friday, February 8 / 6 – 9 pm

Join Composition Café for cocktails and appetizers served in the Museum’s Feature Gallery followed by a 5-course dinner paired with select Constellation wines.

The Light Circus: Art of Nevada Neon

Through February 10

Celebrate a bygone era during this exhilarating presentation of vintage neon signs that once graced some of Nevada’s most iconic restaurants, casinos, hotels, and business establishments. From flashing incandescent bulbs to candy-colored neon tubes, the nostalgic pieces featured in this exhibition have not been seen publicly since they illuminated street side locales decades ago.

TALK Black Rock Design Institute Presents: Clean Lines, Open Spaces: A View of Mid-Century Modern Architecture

Thursday, February 21 / 6pm

Join BRDI for a film exploring the mid-century modern movement in the United States after World War II. Sometimes considered cold and unattractive, mid-century modern designs were a by-product of post-war optimism and reflected a nation’s dedication to building a new future. AIA and APA Continuing Education Credits Available.

Networking and social hour with beer provided by Silver Peak Brewery at 5pm.

ART BITE Drawing Today: Local Artists Discuss the Art of Drawing

Friday, February 22 / noon

Local artists discuss drawing as a medium, as a mode of artistic expression, and a way of expressing and thinking visually. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Hook, Line & Sinker: Contemporary Drawings.

FILM The City Dark: A Search for Night on a Planet That Never Sleeps

Thursday, February 28 / 6pm

The City Dark chronicles the disappearance of darkness as filmmaker (and amateur astronomer) Ian Cheney, moves to New York City from Maine and discovers an urban sky almost completely devoid of stars. Posing a deceptively simple question—“What do we lose, when we lose the night?”—the film leads viewers on a quest to understand how light pollution affects people and the planet. Presented by Tahoe Star Tours in collaboration with the International Dark-Sky Association.

Tickets: $10 / $8 Museum Members / $5 Students with valid I.D.

Grab a beer, groove to the live music, and check out the galleries at First Thursday. First Thursday wine bar sponsored by Whispering Vine Wine Company. Sponsored annually by The X 100.1 FM Radio and Great Basin Brewing Company. Bottled water sponsored by Sam’s Club. Bring the kids for Kids Open Art Studio, available from 5 – 7 pm for $4 per child. First Thursday is free for Museum members or non-members with paid regular admission.

Art Afternoon: Workshop & Social for Seniors

Friday, February 8 / 1 to 3 pm

Expand your interests with a docent-guided tour and studio art class. Light refreshments. No art background necessary.

Cost for a session: $7 / $6 Museum members. Sponsored in part by the Leonette Foundation.

 

Hands/ON! on Second Saturday — Mardi Gras/Carnival: Mask Making and Maracas

Saturday, February 9 / 10 am – 4 pm

Celebrate the Year of the Snake! The Chinese Lunar New Year is celebrated in January or February depending on the lunar calendar. Ring in the New Year with hands-on art projects, performance and storytelling.

Admission to hands/ON! is FREE.
