“There are a number of items that can go a long way in the event of an emergency or disaster that can make great gifts this holiday season,” Munns says. “We tend not to think about disasters during holiday periods, but a disaster can strike at any moment, so gifts that help loved ones and friends build disaster kits, and be prepared, are gifts that continue to give when an emergency suddenly strikes,” Munns says.

Items that should be included in any emergency kit include a battery operated or hand-crank power supply radio that receives NOAA weather updates, flashlight and batteries, a first-aid kit, battery powered lamps, blankets, non-perishable food and water, and other supplies that provide support for a 72-hour period, according to Munns.

“With an emergency kit and supplies should also come a discussion about how family, friends and loved ones will respond in the event of an emergency or disaster,” Munns says, “including developing a communications plan that identifies a location where people meet if they are separated during an emergency, and emergency communications in the event normal communications are disrupted.”

Munns adds that in addition to a home emergency kit and supplies, a vehicle safety kit is another great holiday gift. The kit could include emergency flares, a shovel, flashlights and fluorescent distress markers or flags, reflective highway safety vest, battery cables, emergency non-perishable food and water.
