If you are looking for a Christmas gift that will continue giving, or you are just having difficulty finding just the right or unusual holiday gift, Reno Fire Department Division Chief Sandy Munns, who also serves as the City of Reno’s Emergency Manager, suggests giving gifts that can play a critical role in an emergency, or can help prevent one.
Items that should be included in any emergency kit include a battery operated or hand-crank power supply radio that receives NOAA weather updates, flashlight and batteries, a first-aid kit, battery powered lamps, blankets, non-perishable food and water, and other supplies that provide support for a 72-hour period, according to Munns.
Munns adds that in addition to a home emergency kit and supplies, a vehicle safety kit is another great holiday gift. The kit could include emergency flares, a shovel, flashlights and fluorescent distress markers or flags, reflective highway safety vest, battery cables, emergency non-perishable food and water.
