New Nevada Arts Council exhibit in Carson City features Las Vegas artist

Date:

Orlando Montenegro, Reflex Pattern, sharpie, acrylic and house paint on louan wood panel, 15×11, 2011

Mixed media works of Las Vegas artist Orlando Montenegro are featured in “Radiant Trajectory,” Nov. 26 through Jan. 18 at the OXS Gallery, 716 N. Carson Street, Suite A in Carson City. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and admission is free.

In “Radiant Trajectory,” Montenegro explores abstraction through the distortion of boundaries that separate the body from its environment.  He avoids relying on imagery that allows the viewer to make specific connections to recognizable subject matter by concealing or suggesting. Referencing the body by zooming in on different areas of its contour and shape, Montenegro employs a wandering line, intentional and loose marks, and works with less controlled methods such as drips and spills of acrylic paint in combination with other media.

Montenegro received a 2013 Artist Fellowship grant and works in painting and drawing. Born in Managua, Nicaragua, in 1982, he immigrated to Las Vegas in 1989, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in 2007, and a master’s degree from the University of Arizona. Montenegro’s work has been featured in solo shows at the Left of Center Gallery, Winchester Cultural Center and the College of Southern Nevada’s Fine Arts Gallery; and in group exhibition at the Arts Factory, various UNLV facilities and as part of First Friday’s Get Back Alley. He currently teaches drawing as an adjunct professor at UNLV.

Managed by the Artist Services Program of the Nevada Arts Council, the Office eXhibition Series, or OXS Gallery features artists who have been recognized through the Artist Fellowship program. The Nevada Arts Council is a division of the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, and is funded by the Nevada State Legislature and the National Endowment of the Arts.
