University of Nevada head baseball coach Gary Powers has signed four high school seniors to play for the Wolf Pack in 2014. Devonte German, Mark Nowaczewksi, Trenton Brooks and Thomas Galart have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Pack.
“We are really excited about this group of guys,” Powers said. “They are a very good collection of quality freshmen arms that we will count on immediately contributing to our team success. Not only do they bring tremendous talent to us but they all bring a great physical presence as well.”
German is a 6-5, 235-pound pitcher/outfielder at Reno’s Bishop Manogue High School. This past season he was named Northern Nevada Pitcher of the Year, first-team All-North and first-team all-state after going 6-2 with a 1.26 ERA. In 61.1 innings pitched he struck out 81 and walked just 18. At the plate he batted .420. He also competes in football and basketball at BMHS.
“We feel that Devonte brings us a tremendously talented guy who can compete both on the mound and as a hitter,” Powers said. “He has tremendous potential in both areas and is only going to get better and better as his experience grows.”
Another local standout to sign with the Wolf Pack, Nowaczewski is a 6-4, 185-pound right-handed pitcher at Reed High School in Sparks, Nev. He earned three baseball letters and twice lettered in football at RHS. He is member of RHS’s Northern Nevada Regional Championship football team.
“Mark is an outstanding athlete as is evidenced with the outstanding season he has had on the football field,” added Powers. “He has been consistently improving on the mound and we think he has the potential to be very special in a short period of time. We are excited to have the chance to work with him soon.”
Brooks is a senior at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, Calif., where is a left-handed pitcher and outfielder. His junior year he went 6-1 with 2.01 ERA on the mound. The lefty pitched 59 innings and tossed four complete games. At the plate he batted .386 with one home run, eight doubles and 22 RBI. Honors his junior year include ESPN California All-State Underclassman first team, All-CIF firs team San Diego Section, Grossmont Hills League first team and Player of the Year, East County Sports All-East County first team and San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic team. He helped GHHS capture the 2012 Grossmont Hills League Championship.
“Trenton is an outstanding two way player who will be a great addition at the top of our order and also provides us with a very solid left-handed pitcher who really knows how to compete and use his tools,” Powers said. “He brings an outstanding understanding of how to play the game and an old fashioned work ethic.”
Galart is a senior pitcher at Pioneer High School in Woodland, Calif. As a junior last season the 6-4, 240-pound right-hander went 5-2 with 1.17 ERA. Helped PHS advance to the playoffs and was invited to complete in the area code games and Reebok World Series. He lettered twice in baseball and football.
“Thomas is a big strong pitcher who has tremendous upside and possesses a very good feel for how to pitch for a younger guy,” Power said.
