newgrandsierralogo-5578485-5011808Beginning today, Grand Sierra Resort (GSR) has turned pink in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) and will proudly sponsor and host the 14th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Sunday, Oct. 7. World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Heavyweight Champion John Cena will make a special appearance at the race to show support and raise awareness for the cause. Furthermore, local Channel 2 news anchor, Wendy Damonte, will be a guest speaker at a special Survivor’s Dinner held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3. The dinner celebrates those who have overcome breast cancer and the individuals who supported them. The event will be held in the Reno Ballroom at the GSR and is open to all Race for the Cure 2012 participants. Please RSVP to [email protected].

“We are honored to support the Susan G. Komen organization and feel privileged to be a part of an event that positively impacts the lives of those affected by breast cancer,” said Dan Uonites, vice president of marketing at GSR. “With support from our community, in addition to well-known celebrities such as John Cena, we anticipate this year’s event to be the most successful yet.”

As a major sponsor of the 14th annual event, GSR is committed to helping fund research for a cure and to making the event a success. In fact, a dedicated team of GSR staff and employees will participate in the race and have set an additional goal to rally at least 200 more employees to take part in the event.

The Northern Nevada affiliate of the Susan G. Komen organization began in 1998 with the mission to educate Nevadans about breast cancer and develop screening and treatment programs. Since its inception, the Northern Nevada affiliate has raised and invested more than $3.2 million for local breast cancer programs and $770,000 for research. Seventy-five percent of net proceeds are granted to lifesaving local breast cancer programs while 25 percent funds innovative research to find a cure.
