SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

Brian Sandoval has appointed Bill Young, former Clark County Sheriff and Karen Summers Layne, President of the Las Vegas Humane Society as the new members of the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners. Nevada Bighorns Unlimited (NBU) has some concerns about the appointment of animal advocate, Karen Summers Layne. However, NBU remains optimistic about working with her to protect Nevada’s wildlife.

The nine-member, governor-appointed Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners is responsible for establishing broad policy, setting annual and permanent regulations, reviewing budgets and receiving input on wildlife and boating matters from entities such as the 17 county advisory boards to manage wildlife, as well as non-government organizations such as Nevada Bighorns Unlimited (NBU). Bill Young is a new sportsmen’s representative and Karen Summers Layne is the new general public representative.

“There are a number of our members and other sportsmen’s groups that are not happy with Dr. Layne’s appointment,” said Dennis Wilson, President of NBU. “I know her and I respect her. She is intelligent, passionate and professional. I spoke with her at length yesterday and she is willing to listen and to carefully consider every perspective of each issue before the Commission.” Wilson went on to say, “NBU and Dr. Layne are not always going to agree, but NBU’s goal is to keep an open and communicative relationship with her so we can work together for the betterment of Nevada’s wildlife.”

Bill Young, a fourth generation Nevadan and a life-long hunter and angler, served as the Sheriff of Clark County between 2003 and 2007. He is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and holds a M.S. in Crisis and Emergency Management as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. Currently, Young is the Vice President of Security for Station Casinos.

Dr. Karen Layne holds a Doctorate of Public Administration from the University of Southern California, an M.A. in Government from George Washington University and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Richmond, Virginia. She is retired from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she worked as an assistant professor and the Las Vegas Police Department where she served as planning director. Dr. Layne currently serves as President of the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society.
