“Alice in Potty-land,” the “Golden Throne” and all the favorite portable “potties” return to historic Virginia City, Nev. for the World Championship Outhouse Races Saturday, Oct. 6  and Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012. With participants from across Nevada and California, the race is still open to additional entries.

Taking place down C Street, the town’s main drive, races start at noon on both days and are expected to last until 3 p.m. A parade of outhouses takes place on Saturday prior to the start of the race.

The event is free to the public and is comical entertainment for the whole family. Saturday audience members vote the prettiest, most traditional and most unusual outhouses.

The double elimination tournament accepts three person teams with one person riding and the other two pushing the outhouse. Teams compete for cash and trophies as well as world champion bragging rights.

Outhouse themes vary in styles and originality, encouraging teams, companies, groups or families to be creative. Favorite entrants include “The Flapper Crappers,” “The Haunted Outhouse,” “The Urinator,” “The Potty Poopers,” and more.

Not racing an outhouse? 28 Virginia City merchants host the Privy Wine Walk Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.  Buy a commemorative Virginia City wine glass at the Bucket of Blood booth for $20. Purchase includes a map of all participating merchants.
