Next week, residents may notice city of Reno Public Works out spraying brine on area roadways. This testing is being done to ensure equipment is properly working and crews are trained before the upcoming winter season.
“With the nice weather people aren’t thinking of inclement weather just yet, but at the city of Reno we have to in order to be prepared,” advised John Flansberg, city of Reno public works director. “We want to make sure our equipment, supplies and crews are ready for when the weather arrives.”
Brine consists of a clear solution of tap water and sodium chloride (road salt). It is applied to the roadway to prevent snow from bonding to the streets, making it easier and safer to plow. Brine is up to 20 times more effective than salt and sand and is labor efficient since it will be applied during normal operating hours prior to the arrival of the storm. Crews typically apply the salt brine to major roadways including bridges, steep inclines and hazardous areas.
The city of Reno works to provide safe roadway access in an environmentally sound manner during winter months.
