Sept. 29: Fall for New Color – Join Jon Bruyn (Moana plant doctor, certified arborist, horticultural consultant and high desert gardener) to learn what trees and shrubs will add glorious fall color to your landscape and add value to your home. Jon will share design and planting tips for the maximum color effect, not just for fall, but for the seasons to come. He’ll also tell you how to select plants that won’t feed the local bunny population.
Oct. 6: Creating a Fall Bird Sanctuary – Fall is a great time to set up bird feeders. It allows the winter dwellers to become familiar with them before bad weather arrives and gives migratory birds much needed nutrition for their travels. Join local birding guru and longtime Audubon Society member Alan Gubanich to learn about plants that provide shelter, food sources, how to maintain a consistent source of water and how to identify the many species that will show up in your yard.
Oct. 13: Best Trees for Reno – Steve Churchillo (city of Reno urban forester) and Jon Bruyn (Moana plant doctor, horticulturalist and certified arborist) team up for this informative seminar devoted to trees. They will discuss which are the best trees for Reno and why plus review the Champion Tree list of mature specimens located in Reno, explaining why they made the list. They will also share the results of the Reno/Sparks Tree Canopy Assessment, which analyzed our current tree canopy and the economic and environmental benefits of existing and future tree canopy scenarios.
Oct. 20: Putting Your Garden to Bed – Moana plant doctor, consulting horticulturalist and long time high desert gardener Jim Stanton will explain what you should and should not do in your landscape to prepare for winter as well as during the coming winter months. Because critters can wreak havoc during the winter if you are not prepared, Jim will thoroughly discuss how to protect your lawn and plants from deer, voles, rabbits, insects and diseases. He will also address winter care of fruit trees and what yard waste can be composted
Oct. 27: Hooray! Hooray! – Applause! Applause! Bring in a few photos of your flower garden/containers to celebrate your season long gardening endeavors! Long-time gardening expert speaker/instructor as well as published photographer/writer Lainie Vreeland will share her expertise as you share your garden photos with the group. This is a fun time to share your successes with your fellow gardeners.
All seminars are free and held at Moana Nursery, 1190 W. Moana Lane, in our Landscape and Design Center across the Nursery parking lot, unless otherwise stated.
