U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to visit Reno campus

Date:

Town Hall on College Affordability and the Hispanic Community at the University of Nevada, Reno is part of cross-country ‘Education Drives America’ tour

A Town Hall on College Affordability and the Hispanic Community, featuring U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, is coming to the University of Nevada, Reno campus Sept. 12. The public-forum event will take place in the Joe Crowley Student Union Ballroom, 5 – 6:30 p.m., and is part of the U.S. Department of Education’s cross-country, “Education Drives America” back-to-school bus tour.

The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics is partnering with the U.S. Department of Education to bring the Town Hall event to Reno. In addition to Secretary Duncan, the program will include Jose Rico, director of the White House Initiative.

The Town Hall will bring together university, community college and high school students, along with parents, teachers, education officials and community leaders to discuss education topics – including affordability and access to higher education – from the perspective of Hispanic students and families. Representatives of the University, Truckee Meadows Community College and Western Nevada College will be on hand with college and financial aid information.

“The University is committed to diversity and encouraging our Latino youth to aspire to attend college and successfully complete their degree,” said Emma Sepulveda, director of the Latino Research Center, which is part of the University and is a primary sponsor of the Town Hall. “This event will provide the opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities these students and their parents face. Through the forum, our region will contribute to an important national policy discussion.”

Doors to the event open at 4 p.m., and the Town Hall begins at 5 p.m. It will be available nationally via a live web stream at http://imedia.unr.edu/live_event/.

Free public parking for the event will be available in the University’s West Stadium Parking Complex, north of Lawlor Events Center on Virginia Street.
