ProjectGO Gears Up for Youth Rafting

Date:

Project Great Outdoors announces the start of their 2012 rafting season. A non-profit organization funded by volunteer and donor support, ProjectGO guides
youth towards broader perspectives and self-discovery through adventures in the great outdoors.

“ProjectGO has grown from three guys wanting to share a love of the outdoors to an educational program committed to recognized best practices in experiential education,” said Kurt Hoge. “Young people take risks to test boundaries to see where they fit in the world. Adventure based outdoor programs are a healthy outlet for this risk-taking behavior.”

Hoge serves as the board’s president and has been a rafting guide for 17 years. Hoge also functioned as the convener for the Association for Experiential Education’s West Regional Conference in 2009 and 2010. The ProjectGO Board of directors envisioned a world where no young person is denied the opportunity to learn through adventure in the great outdoors.

The group maintains more than 200 volunteers and has served more than 4,000 qualified participants since 2000. About 75% of the participants are economically underprivileged, some even being homeless. This year’s goal is to recruit 600 students to participate in the
program.

ProjectGO offers under-privileged youth rafting trips for as little as $15 per person, significantly less than the cost of most commercials rafting trips. The trips are offered in 3 ascending skill levels, ranging from an entry level trip up to a challenging overnight journey.

In October ProjectGO will host the 2nd annual home-brewing event Backwash at the Siena, a competition pitting home-brewers against each other for the chance to display their blend on tap at Silver Peak Brewery. Less than 50 spaces are left in the competition and registration ends August 20th. Backwash serves as ProjectGO’s biggest fundraiser featuring live music, great food and a silent auction.
