Hot August Nights prepares to rumble the streets of northern Nevada during 2012 event

Date:

Hot August Nights, the premiere classic car event in the world, will celebrate its 26th year by inspiring nostalgia and filling the streets of northern Nevada with restored hot rods and the best sounds of the 50s, 60s and 70s. With performances from memorable entertainers including the Village People and John Kay & Steppenwolf, to new and returning events such as ride and drives and the drag races, Hot August Nights 2012 will be an event unlike any other, with something for everyone to enjoy. The event kicks off in South Lake Tahoe Aug. 3-5 and continues in Reno and Sparks Aug. 7-12.

“Hot August Nights has remained an integral part of northern Nevada for more than two decades and we anticipate 2012 to be one of our biggest events yet,” said Tony Marini, executive director of Hot August Nights. “This year, we have some of the best entertainment, we’ve brought back some really crowd-pleasing events and are introducing some exciting new events to give attendees and participants the experience of a lifetime and give our community an event to be proud of.”

Debuting for the first time ever during Hot August Nights are the thrilling Ride and Drives. Sponsored by Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co., Ride and Drives take participants on a “white knuckle” ride in a Ford Mustang or a Chevy Corvette. Professional drivers get behind the wheel on a specially designed course to satisfy each passenger’s need for speed.

Back for its second consecutive year, the Drag Races & Burnouts pit drivers in a head-to-head competition at the John Ascuaga’s Nugget Speedway. New this year at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center is the exhilarating Demolition Derby. This adrenaline-fueled event requires drivers to ram their vehicles into one another in an attempt to be the last car standing.

Over a span of 10 days, Hot August Nights takes event-goers back in time to revel in decades that have since passed. Whether it’s becoming a spectator in one of the popular Show-n-Shines or attending a concert featuring tunes from classic entertainers, perusing the 70,000 square-foot swap meet, being a car participant in the event, or a member of the organization, there is something fun for everyone to experience.

Hot August Nights begins in South Lake Tahoe Aug. 3-5 and continues in Reno and Sparks Aug. 7-12. Car registration is open to all 1972 and older American and European cars and trucks for both venues and each car registrant will receive a very special commemorative event shirt and hat, free Poker Walk hand, dash plaque, and an assortment of other items.
