SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

Robotic surgeons from Taiwan visited the robotic epicenter at Renown Regional Medical Center yesterday and today to observe gynecological cases and learn firsthand from one of only a handful of world experts in the field. Peter Lim, M.D., medical director of Renown Institute for Robotic Surgery and medical director of gynecological oncology at Renown Institute for Cancer, provided expertise and guidance to the visiting physicians.

With the skill and expertise of Dr. Lim, Renown Regional is one of only five hospitals across the United States to earn the designation as Robotic Epicenter for gynecologic oncology. To be designated as an epicenter means to be a top performing center in the country for Robotic Surgery.

Earning the epicenter designation means Dr. Lim and the expert surgical team at Renown have perfected using the da Vinci Surgical System and have become an internationally recognized training center. The da Vinci Epicenter Program is designed to provide new da Vinci surgeons and their operating staff with opportunities to observe cases at distinguished training centers.

New da Vinci gynecologic surgeons and their teams visit epicenter sites like the one at Renown to observe cases and learn da Vinci surgical techniques and operating room efficiency. Epicenter surgeons then become mentors and/or proctors for these new surgeons in their learning journey. Even after new da Vinci surgeons have successfully completed their initial case series, these mentor-trainee relationships continue through discussions at scientific conferences, the da Vinci Surgery Online Community and through advanced training.

Dr. Lim is one of the top-tier robotic surgeons in the United States in terms of experience and is popular among his colleagues for case observation. He regularly invites surgeons to sit in and view various technical procedures.

“Given our ongoing effort to reach new levels of excellence and care for cancer patients, visits like today underscore our commitment to continuous improvement and the teamwork and collaboration required to exceed national standards,” said Dr. Lim. “da Vinci Surgery has not only made a huge difference in the quality of life for my patients here locally these past several years, but I think it will also have a positive impact for others globally.”
