Dayton to ‘Think Local’ with Thursday farmers market block parties

The first summer “Farmers Market Block Party in Old Town Dayton” kicks off on Thursday, June 28, from 3 to 6 p.m.

The block party is a family–friendly event showcasing local artists, history, food, musicians, poets and actors. Spend Thursday afternoons finding the perfect ingredients for your dinner with regional vegetables, fruits, herbs and honey at the farmers’ market, and then take a leisurely walk through nearby historic Old Town sampling local restaurants’ menu specials, free art exhibits, live music, museum tours and more.

You can find maps and lists of the events in this celebration of community, arts and culture at Community Roots, Dayton Community Center lobby, Dayton Valley Branch Library, Pizza Factory, Compadres, Js’ Bistro, Dayton Museum and Community Treasures Thrift Shop.

Community Roots’ Dayton Farmers Market: You’ll find fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs and honey from small farms and ranches in the region and live music by local musicians like Donna Crowell. The market is organized by the nonprofit Community Roots, and cash, credit, SNAP and USDA senior coupons are welcome. Farmers at this market donate their excess produce to the local food pantry, and local teen interns learn how to run a farmers market and how to manage organic community gardens. Located at Community Roots on 2nd Avenue and HWY 50 one block from the Dayton Community Center.

Community Treasures nonprofit thrift shop: This thrift shop on 80 Shady Lane in Old Town Dayton offers real bargains on blankets, books, kitchen ware, clothing, collectibles, etc. Proceeds benefit local youth programs through Central Lyon Youth Connections.

Dayton Museum: The museum hosts special 3-6 p.m. hours on Thursday, June 28, at 485 Shady Lane in Old Town Dayton. Make it a family event and visit the art exhibit and the museum, and stay for dinner at one of the area’s many restaurants.

Js Bistro: You can choose from Italian dinners, Tuscan style pizzas, fresh seafood, steaks and menu specials at Js Bistro at 30 Pike St. in Old Town Dayton. Ask the chef about his special menu items on Thursday evenings this summer that include fresh produce from the local farmers market.

Pizza Factory: On Thursday afternoons this summer, ask about the special menu items for “Farmers Market Block Parties.” 185 Highway 50 East, Dayton.

Compadres Mexican Restaurant: Located just across the street from the Dayton Community Center and the art exhibit, at 165 Pike Street.

Gold Canyon Steak House: Located in Nevada’s historic Old Town Dayton at 160 Main Street, the steakhouse is open daily.
