SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE
DAYTON, Nev.–Beginning July 1, the Dayton Food Pantry, located at 4 Enterprise Way, will be closed on Fridays. It will continue to be open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Beginning on July 21, the monthly distribution of commodities by the Dayton Food Pantry will change from noon to 3 p.m. instead of noon to 4 p.m. but will still take place on the third Saturday of each month at Sutro Elementary School. Also on July 21, participants will need to register for the new fiscal year.
Volunteer Coordinator Freida Carbery reported that in May, 1,380 individuals, or 428 families, received emergency food assistance from the Dayton Pantry. The pantry also provides 10 food boxes for homebound Dayton senior citizens and helps fill the weekend food backpacks for local students in need. Carbery said the community continues to show outstanding commitment to fighting local hunger and stated,“Thanks to the generosity of individuals, local schools, clubs, agencies and businesses, we are able once again to provide for our community.”
A recent yard sale by the pantry brought in over $2,400, and the pantry recently received donations from the mail carriers’ food drive, thanks to the Dayton Post Office. The spring Feinstein Challenge was also a success again this year with support from many individual volunteers, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts troops, the “Stuff a Police Car” event at Smith’s Grocery and all Dayton schools,.
Volunteers are always welcome, Carbery says, because hundreds of volunteers are needed to help to make all the complex operations of the Dayton Food Bank run smoothly. There are many ways to help – for instance, the next yard sale fundraiser for the pantry will be August 4, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m, and donations for the yard sale are welcome.
