SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

On Tuesday, May 22, 2012, Washoe County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 700 block of Renoir Drive in Sun Valley on a report of a 1-year-old boy not breathing. The child was transported to a local hospital where it was determined that he had sustained serious injuries consistent with physical abuse. Deputies learned that the child had been in the care, custody and control of a local “babysitter” named Maria Melendrez-Anguiano, who resides in the 7200 block of Leonardo Court. Sheriff’s Detectives were called out to continue the investigation.

Upon completion of the investigation, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Detectives determined that probable cause existed to arrest Melendrez-Anguiano for Felony Child Abuse with Substantial Bodily Harm. Melendrez-Anguiano surrendered to Sheriff’s Office Detectives without incident. Bail was set at $20,000. Melendrez-Anguiano is not a licensed daycare provider. Since the initial report, the child’s condition has gradually improved, but the long-term effects are still unknown.
