SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

The Reno Ronald McDonald House continues its 25th Anniversary Celebration this year with an annual event Friday, May 11 to award needs based college scholarships to northern Nevada high school students. RMHC U.S. Scholarship program is just one of the programs and services provided by Ronald McDonald House Charities® Northern Nevada (RMHC). The awards ceremony and dinner for the thirty-seven recipients and their families will be at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa from 6:30-9:00 p.m.

The RMHC U.S. Scholarship program is the second largest scholarship program of its kind in northern Nevada, second only to the Millennium Scholarship Program in the number of scholarships awarded each year. The RMHC U.S. Scholarship program has awarded over $830,000 in scholarships to 576 students in northern Nevada since 2000; this includes $595,900 in first year scholarships as well as $236,700 in renewable scholarship awards.

“Students across northern Nevada work hard to earn top marks and they dream of the college they’ll attend and the education they’ll receive,” said Marty Ozer, Executive Director. “Unfortunately, many of those students can’t afford to get the education of their dreams. We want these students to reach their full potential. To help them accomplish this, our network of donors, along with RMHC Global, offer scholarships to students in financial need who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.” Funding for the scholarship program is raised by a local Scholarship Committee and is matched by RMHC Global (up to $18,500). The deadline for the 2012/2013 academic year will be announced in November 2012, and are typically due at the end of January. Applicants will be notified of scholarship award status in May 2013. Students can download an application or apply online at www.rmhc-reno.org this coming November

“I was honored to be chosen as a recipient for the RMHC Scholarship in 2007,” said Vivian Long, 2007-2011 Scholarship Recipient received her degree in Criminal justice from UNR in 2011.

“Due to your generosity, I am proud to announce my intended graduation. You have turned my dream of attending college into a reality. I plan on studying for the LSAT and applying to law schools this summer. I am excited for what the future holds for me and will always remember how you made it possible.”

“We invite the community to help support, sustain, and grow the scholarship program by attending The Red Shoe Gala, a fundraiser benefitting RMHC,” said Rose Marie Donohue, President. The Red Shoe Gala will be held on Thursday, July 19 at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in the Grand Ballroom, with special guests Maury Povich and Connie Chung. Cocktail reception and Best Red Shoes Contest will begin at 6:00 p.m. with Dinner and Program at 7:00 p.m. Tables of ten can be purchased for $1,500, and sponsorship opportunities are available for this inaugural event. Proceeds will go to RMHC and its programs and 100 percent of the funds will stay in northern Nevada.
