Reno City Council Candidate Sustainability Forum paves the way to Reno’s future

Date:

GREENUP! NEWS RELEASE

Tomorrow, 17 of 27 Reno City Council candidates will come together to discuss their vision and policies they would implement to pave the way toward a sustainable future for the city. The Candidate Sustainability Forum, the only one of its kind ahead of the June 12 primary, takes place Tuesday, May 22, 5:30 -7:30 p.m. at the University of Nevada, Reno, Davidson Math and Science Redfield Auditorium, Room 110. The event is free and open to the public.

Jen Huntley, president of greenUp!, the local sustainability coalition spearheading the event, says this discussion is important because sustainable policies are the key to a thriving Reno.

“The Truckee Meadows is blessed with an abundance of renewable energy resources, two nationally ranked research institutions, and is largely free of heavy-polluting industries,” Huntley said.  “It seems we could be doing much better than we are right now. Reno could be at the top of national urban sustainability lists.”

Huntley says people often misinterpret sustainable policies to mean heavy environmental regulation that restricts business development. This belief is misguided, Huntley says, and impedes intelligent discussion that could lead to viable long-term growth policies for the Truckee Meadows.

“When you talk about sustainability, you’re talking about ‘the triple bottom line’ of environment, economy and social equity. All three of these aspects must be balanced to achieve real policy solutions,” Huntley said.

Along with greenUp!, Scenic Nevada and the UNR Environmental Sciences Graduate Program are sponsoring the event. The evening includes a panel discussion, moderated by Reno News & Review Editor D. Brian Burghart, as well as an audience question and answer session. A no-host reception immediately follows at Bibo Coffee, 945 Record St.  Free parking for this event is available after 5 p.m. at the UNR staff lot, corner of Evans and Record Street.

GreenUP! is a coalition of sustainability advocates from the business, nonprofit, government and education sectors of Truckee Meadows and the Central Sierra.  United in our appreciation of our spectacular but fragile natural habitat, we are convinced that sustainable business practices are the key to our region’s economic revival and the foundation for future generations to share the quality of life we now enjoy.
