HARRY REID NEWS RELEASE

harryreid1-150x150-9994044-8225725WASHINGTON, D.C.- Sen. Harry Reid today announced three grants totaling $909,865 for Upward Bound projects for high school students at University of Nevada, Reno. The Upward Bound program helps give high school students the tools to pursue and complete a college education. The grants will support projects for nearly 200 students. The grants are funded by the United States Department of Education, which will support 780 projects nationwide to assist approximately to 60,000 American students.

“I have long supported Upward Bound because we must open educational opportunities to all Nevada students,” said Reid. “This funding will allow northern Nevada institutions to identify promising high school students and provide them with the skills they need to succeed in college and the workforce.”

About Upward Bound

Upward Bound provides support and opportunities for disadvantaged high school students to succeed in their precollege performance and in their higher education. Upward Bound works to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. Programs and services include academic tutoring, assistance in preparing for college entrance examinations, education or counseling services, on-campus residential programs for high school students, exposure to cultural events and other activities not usually available to disadvantaged youth, and many other opportunities.
