Bikeway to receive national award

Date:

The Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway has been recognized as one of the top trail
projects in the country for 2012, garnering a design and construction
award in the annual Coalition for Recreational Trails competition.
Janet Phillips, president and founder of the non-profit group in
Reno, will accept the award in a  ceremony at the Rayburn House Office
Building on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., in early June. The coalition of public and private trail-building groups will honor eight trail projects for the best use of federal recreational trail grants.
The  grants have been the primary source of
funding for the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway, a project aimed at filling in
gaps on a route along the 116-mile Truckee River from Lake Tahoe to
Pyramid Lake, Phillips said.
Through the Nevada Division of State Parks, the bikeway has won $440,000 in competition with other projects in the state for the federal grants. “We have been involved with funding for the building of the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway since its inception,” said Jenny Scanland, state parks and recreation programs manager. “We are exceptionally proud that a Nevada-funded recreation project has won this award.”
The grants were critical in building the Mogul-to-Verdi link in
2005, opening the trail on the Pyramid Reservation in 2007,  building the Waltham
Way trail east of Sparks in 2009 and a current project to
renovate the Fleish Bridge and open the first few miles of trail in the
Truckee Canyon west of Verdi, Phillips said.
In all, the bikeway group has worked to open 32 miles of trail to the public over the last seven years.
Grants for the federal recreational trail program come from federal
highway funds. Congress is now considering legislation to reauthorize
the trail program.
