Yerington’s Stand Tall team has been very active this year! The group currently includes a dozen students, and they welcome new members.  Meetings are every Tuesday during lunch at Yerington High School with facilitator Donna McDonald.

The group kicked off the school year by participating in a 5K challenge in Silver Springs to help fund the Stand Tall scholarship for college and technical education. During the holidays, Yerington Stand Tall gathered over 300 pairs of shoes and distributed them to various organizations. In February, the group attended a regional youth leadership training in Virginia City, funded by Healthy Communities Coalition. The information they learned at the training will assist them in educating their school and community in underage alcohol use prevention.  The group also recently made their first presentation on the dangers of tobacco use to the Boys and Girls Club after school program in Yerington, using props like pig lungs and examples of chemicals found in cigarettes to drive home their points.

For more information on Yerington Stand Tall, please contact Yerington Stand Tall’s adult facilitator, Donna McDonald at 309-3720. Stand Tall teams exist in every high school in Lyon and Storey Counties and  lead on-going educational campaigns, activities and events to promote wellness and prevent use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs during the school year.  The teams are funded through Healthy Communities Coalition, a nonprofit.
