CITY OF RENO NEWS RELEASE

Twenty-two area residents received their certificates of completion from the Reno Citizens Institute program during Wednesday’s Reno City Council meeting. Over the past eight weeks the residents have spent their Tuesday evenings learning how their local government works through presentations and discussions involving all city of Reno departments.

RCI facilitator Lisa Mann notes, “The RCI program offers a great opportunity for those who want to serve on one of the city’s many boards and commissions or want to run for elected office or just want to learn more about how city government works.”

The program schedule includes sessions with the city manager’s office, human resources, finance, communications and technology, parks, recreation and community services; the Reno Fire Department, city attorney’s office, municipal court, Reno Police Department, public works and community development. The graduates learned how their tax dollars are allocated, how department directors make decisions and how public officials work together to make our city great.

The graduates are Wendy Alderman, Corey Bond, Chelsea Canon, Robert Cofer, Oscar Delgado, Allyson Denby-Wong, Lydia Gutierrez, Sean McCormick, Kate McGee, Robert McGrapth, Christoph Micklon, Billy Miller, Jessamyn Parker, Scott Pierson, Nancy Podewils, Jim Proctor, Jeff Stake, Michael Trudell, David Ward, Kevin Wieske, Sheldon Werber and Susan Werber.

Five of the participants are candidates for the Reno City Council seats in the 2012 election. Two of the participants are city of Reno employees who wanted to learn more about other departments and meet staff.

This is the 24th class to complete the program created in 1999. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and residents of the Truckee Meadows. For more information about the RCI program visit the city of Reno website or contact Reno Direct at (775) 334-INFO.
