CARSON CITY–A dozen Carson High School Students recently learned the importance of building and maintaining good credit. The goal was to provide knowledge that would make them more savvy borrowers.

Four 90-minute classes held Jan. 26 and 27 were taught by Jesse Hartford, consumer loan specialist, and Jackie Tilton, consumer loan processer, both from Greater Nevada Credit Union. Topics included interest rates and accruals and different types of loans.

“We explained how good credit is a benefit,” said Tilton. “And how it enables you to more easily qualify for loans and pay less for them.”

Tilton said instructors took students through the loan process, sharing credit bureau examples and explaining what underwriters look for. She said that the classes were dynamic and each one was a bit different as they focused on the group’s specific interests. Hartford added that she was pleased with how engaged the students were, especially as some had just opened student credit cards.

The classes were conceived by Pam Grim, supervisor at the credit union’s student branch inside Carson High School.

“Jackie and I were so excited when Pam invited us to present,” said Hartford. “We hope we gave these students more confidence to ask questions and make better decisions as they enter credit situations.”
