ELKO—The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Elko District Office announces speakers for its open communications forum Feb. 29.
Presenting a brief overview of the BLM’s Sage-grouse habitat conservation efforts is Michael Herder, Elko District Manager. Herder is on a four-month detail to Elko from his former position as the Associate District Manager in the Ely District. Herder is a graduate of Humboldt State University with a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Management and a Master’s in Marine Biology. Herder has been with the BLM since 1988 and currently serves as the consultant to the BLM’s National Office on bats and related issues.
Elko District’s Natural Resource Specialist Matt Murphy will present on restoration efforts on Spruce Mountain within the Spruce Allotment. Murphy, a native of Gardnerville, Nev., holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada, Reno with dual majors in forestry and rangeland management. Murphy began his career with the BLM as a seasonal firefighter in Carson City and moved to the Elko District in 2006 as an Engine Captain in Wells.
The communications forum provides the public an opportunity to learn more about projects being undertaken by the Elko District as well as a forum to provide input to the BLM.
This is the first of several planned forums to maintain an open dialogue between BLM and the many users of America’s public lands. Topics for this forum include sage-grouse conservation and the Spruce Mountain restoration project. Specialists will present material on the above topics as well as be available for discussion.
After topic presentations, there will be an opportunity for public speaking. Comments can be made regarding any topic and will be recorded for future BLM use. Written comments will be accepted as well.
The forum is open to the public and will be at the Elko District Office located at 3900 E. Idaho St. The forum begins at 6 p.m. and is expected to last approximately two hours. Public speakers will need to register either at the event or prior to by email at[email protected] or by calling Lesli Ellis at (775) 753-0386. Requests will need to include requestor’s name, address and phone number along with the topic of their comment.
