5-K run at Lahontan raises funds for Silver Stage scholarship and resource bank

Date:

SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

The first annual Healthy Communities Coalition Lahontan 5K Run fundraiser was a huge success with 91 runners and 20 volunteers from the Silver Stage High Stand Tall group, Healthy Communities Coalition and Silver Stage Task Force. The event included runners from Tahoe, Gardnerville, Reno, Fernley, Fallon, Yerington, Carson City, Dayton and Silver Springs.

All funds raised through the event were split between two local groups: Silver Stage High School Stand Tall and Silver Stage Community Task Force.

Stand Tall is a youth leadership group that leads service projects that benefit the community and implements strategies to prevent alcohol, tobacco, prescription and other drug abuse.

This year, Stand Tall members who are graduating seniors will have an opportunity to apply for a new scholarship that the 5K run has helped to fund. The scholarship winner will be chosen based on volunteer hours and community involvement. For more information, contact Cara Childs at 315-2990 or Lavurne Jeffreys at Healthy Communities Coalition at 246-7550.

The other half of the funds raised by the 5K Run go toward a new student assistance project of the Silver Stage Community Task Force called the Silver Stage Resource Bank. The purpose of the Resource Bank is to assist K-12 students in Silver Springs schools with fees for school-related items like class lab and equipment fees for science, math, art, school clubs, band and woodshop.

Also included is coverage of costs for sports physicals, gym, team and other items, such as prom dresses, shoes and tuxedo rentals. Only third party referrals from school staff, clergy, medical professionals, social services, coaches, etc. are accepted. The task force addresses the students’ needs with no compromise of privacy. There are no administrative costs, and all funds raised go directly to students. For more information, contact Cara Childs at 315-2990 or Lavurne Jeffreys at Healthy Communities Coalition at 246-7550.

Lavurne Jeffreys reported the following list of winners from the 5K race:

First Place Male Youth: Zion Ferrie 17:30 from Silver Stage High School
First Place Female Youth: Rybecca Fletcher 23:59 from Dayton High School
First place Adult Male: Brian Kirkley 18:47
First place Adult Female: Carrie McCreary 18:57

The Best Effort Prize was awarded to Joleen Walker, who completed the race with her new baby in a stroller.

Outstanding prize packages were donated by Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno, Bully’s Sports Bar in Carson City, Casino Fandango of Carson City, CV Sports in Carson City, Pizza Factory in Dayton, Empire Ranch Golf Course in Carson City, Fernley Chiropractic, Lavoie Construction, Rapscallion Seafood House of Reno, WildCreek Golf Course in Sparks and Wild Island Family Adventure Park of Sparks.

Both Stand Tall and the Silver Stage Task Force are partners of the nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to either, please call Healthy Communities Coalition at 775-246-7550 or donate online at www.healthycomm.org.
