WINNEMUCCA — Short-term firewood cutting will be allowed in designated areas of public lands within the East Range, Pershing County between Nov. 1 through Nov. 30, 2011. Special short-term firewood harvesting permits must be purchased prior to harvesting. Permits are available at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Office in Winnemucca, Nev., and the Pershing County Farm Service Agency in Lovelock, Nev.
The identified firewood harvesting areas are being made available due to potential fire hazards. These areas contain stands of dead or down juniper trees that are the result of past wildfire events. Permits will be issued only for areas specified on the map accompanying the permit. The cost of the permit is $5 per cord with a limit of four cords per year. The permit is valid throughout the month of November 2011.
Other wood-cutting permits are also available to harvest firewood from public lands within designated harvest areas in Yellowstone Canyon within the East Range and in the Stillwater Range. No resale or other commercial use of the wood is allowed.
To minimize the risk of wildfire, it is recommended that woodcutters have a shovel and extra water available, and all chainsaws must be equipped with functioning spark arrestors.
Permits can be purchased at the BLM Office, 5100 East Winnemucca Blvd., in Winnemucca and/or the Pershing County Farm Service Agency, 110 American Blvd., in Lovelock. Maps of these areas are included with the permits.
