Deadline for governor’s poster/essay contest is tomorrow

sandovallogo-300x91-3284887-6059413CARSON CITY – Tomorrow is the deadline for mailing entries in Governor Brian Sandoval’s statewide poster and essay contest for Nevada school children. The contest, open to all Nevada school children in grades K thru 12, in district, charter, private or home schools, focuses on what the Constitution means and why it’s important.

“As a former federal judge and attorney general, I’ve had the opportunity to interpret and learn about the Constitution,” Sandoval said. “I am looking forward to seeing and reading the entries which will add to our Nevada Day celebration in the capitol.”

To enter, students in grades K thru 3 should create an 11 by 17 poster in any medium focusing on “what the Constitution means to me.” Students in grades 4 and 5 should write a handwritten or typed essay or 250 words or less on “what the Constitution means to me.” Students in grades 6 thru 8 should write a typed, double-spaced essay of 500 to 750 words on “why is the Constitution important to our Republic.” Students in grades 9 thru 12 should write a typed, double-spaced essay of 750 – 1000 words on “why is the Constitution important to our Republic.”

All entries must include the child’s name, address, home phone number and school. Entries should be mailed to Governor’s Constitution Poster and Essay Contest, P.O. Box 2551, Carson City, NV 89702. All entries must be postmarked no later than Oct. 15.

The awards ceremony will be in the Nevada Room at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City on Oct. 29. If a winner cannot be present, the governor will present the award at a later date.

Awards for each grade group are 1st place, $100 savings bond; 2nd place, $50 savings bond, and 3rd place, $25 savings bond. Private funding will be provide the prizes.
