Program helps those managing chronic conditions live a healthier life
Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center offers a free chronic disease management program to assist individuals living with chronic conditions improve their overall health. This six-week program, Healthy Aging: Up2Me, was created through a partnership with the Sanford Center for Aging at the University of Nevada, Reno. Beginning Thursday, Sept. 29, the program will be offered each Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Sparks Senior Center on 97 Richards Way in Sparks. The program concludes on November 3.
“The resources and support offered through this program help transform the lives of those in our community coping with chronic conditions” said Susan Harris, PhD, coordinator of Gerontology Academic program at the Sanford Center for Aging. “Certified trainers provide life-changing guidance to help individuals better manage symptoms and increase overall well-being.”
Individuals 55 and older managing chronic conditions such as arthritis, heart or lung conditions, high blood pressure, cancer or other diseases are eligible to register for the program. Each class teaches individuals how to manage symptoms through exercise techniques, diet management, setting personal goals, utilizing community resources and effectively communicating concerns with a physician. Upon completion of the program, all participants will receive a copy of the book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.
The program is offered each month at different locations throughout the community. The next series will begin on Thursday, September, 29 at 9 a.m. at the Sparks Senior Center at 97 Richards Way.
