In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the University of Nevada, Reno Department of Economics and Sociology (now two separate departments), Yuri Okina, one of Japan’s leading female economists, will be presenting on campus next Tuesday, Sept. 13. Okina will give two presentations, one more related to economics, one more related to sociology.
Noon – 1 p.m.: To commemorate the anniversary of the sociology department, Okina will speak on the role of women in Japan in the Joe Crowley Student Union, Room 422.
3 – 4 p.m.: To commemorate the anniversary of the economics department, Okina will present “Challenges for Japan’s Economy in the Face of Fukushima” in Room 107/109 of the Continuing Education Building on Virginia Street, between 10th Street and 11th Street. She will be introduced by Thomas Cargill, economics professor in the College of Business. A coffee reception will follow.

Okina is an executive vice president at Japan’s National institute for Research Advancement, as well as research director and chief senior economist of the Japan Research Institute. She has published extensively on Japan’s financial systems and has been an invited professor at Keio University and Waseda University in Japan.
