RENO FIRE DEPT. NEWS RELEASE
At 11:37 p.m. last evening, Reno firefighters along with volunteers from the Wadsworth and Nixon Volunteer Fire Departments responded to a report of brush fire near 241 Virginia Street in Wadsworth.
While crews began extinguishing the brush fire, smoke was seen coming from the old schoolhouse. Firefighters immediately began removing the boards that covered up the windows to the abandoned schoolhouse. Once the boards were removed, heavy smoke and intense heat billowed from the structure followed by an immediate burst of flames. Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately two hours and were able to prevent it from spreading to nearby homes.
The old schoolhouse was a total loss. It is suspected that the fire may have started in the schoolhouse and spread to the surrounding grass and brush. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
The Reno Fire Department responded to the fire with two brush engines, one structure engine, one water tender, one safety officer and one battalion chief.
