GOVERNOR’S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE

CARSON CITY – Governor Brian Sandoval today announced he has appointed Steve Canavero of Reno as Director of the State Charter School Authority.

“Nevada is now one of only eight states to have a statewide authorizing agency focused on building high quality charter schools,” Sandoval said. “Steve’s on-the-ground experience in charter schools and in the Nevada Department of Education will lead the way to more choice for parents and innovative best practices for public schools in our state.”

To more fully integrate charter schools into the Nevada education system, Senate Bill 212 was signed by the governor. The bill eliminates the current governing board for charter schools, which is a subcommittee of the State Board of Education and transfers the responsibility for authorizing and overseeing high-quality charter schools in Nevada to the Charter School Authority.

The director of the Charter School Authority will supervise all administrative, technical and procedural activities of the Authority and ensure that charter school autonomy is preserved pursuant to state laws and regulations. The Authority’s governing board will be appointed later this year.

Currently the director of the Office of Charter schools at the Nevada Department of Education, Steve Canavero has served as a charter school principal in California and as the director of evaluation and planning for the Forest Charter School in Nevada City, Calif. As the director of evaluation and planning, Steve successfully implemented a criterion referenced online assessment enabling teachers and administrators to measure growth in student achievement.

Canavero began his career as a teacher in California before earning his Ph.D. at the University of Nevada, Reno. At UNR, Canavero served as a part-time research assistant and gave his dissertation on an interpretive policy analysis of charter school legislation in Nevada.

A published author, Canavero has given more than 10 presentations on education. A graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Canavero earned his master’s at the University of Nevada, Reno.
